5 Writers Group Story – Part Four by Jennie Jarvis

EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD – DAY

Charred ashes and a few crooked timbers are all that remain of the house. Police tape ward off any wayward trespassers, but it didn’t stop the woman standing in the center. RACHEL, 28, frail and pale, shakes as she surveys the wreckage, kicking aside burnt timbers as she searches. If the wind blows, she might blow away with the ash.

RACHEL
Come on. Where are you?

A gleam of something shiny in the ash. Rachel runs forward, reaches for it. Pulls out –

THE REMAINS OF A BURNT ROSARY

Rachel rubs the beads, revealing the color beneath.

A SCUFFLE behind her causes her to turn.

GAVIN
Rache?

Standing on the sidewalk is GAVIN, 30, rotund yet clean cut. He’d look like an accountant except for his lack of a suit.

GAVIN (CON’T)
What are you doing here?

RACHEL
What did you do?

GAVIN
What? I didn’t- I wasn’t even here.

RACHEL
Where’s the rest?

She tosses the rosary aside, turns back to the ashes and digs into it with her hands.

GAVIN
What are you doing? You’re getting filthy.

He rushes forward but stops at the police tape.

RACHEL
You didn’t save it. I told you it was important.

GAVIN
The cigar box? There was nothing in there but meaningless crap.

Rachel lifts her hands, nothing but ash drifts through her fingers.

RACHEL
I’m dead.

GAVIN
What?

She turns to him, the ash on her face streaked with tears.

RACHEL
You’ve killed us both.

INT. HOTEL ROOM – BATHROOM – SHOWER – DAY

Dark gray streaks spin down the drain with water from the shower. Rachel stands under the water, surrounded by steam, staring into nothingness.

A KNOCK on the door.

GAVIN (O.S.)
Rache?

Behind the shower curtain, a DARK SHADOW approaches. The shower curtain pulls back.

RACHEL
Gavin…

The shadow POUNCES. Rachel slams into the tile wall.

Blood seeps into the water along with the ash, swirling down the drain.

INT. HOTEL ROOM – DAY

Gavin KNOCKS on the bathroom door again.

GAVIN
Rachel, come on. Let’s move on real world time.

SFX: THE SHOWER TURNS OFF

GAVIN
Finally…

He crosses to a suitcase on the bed, throws it open, begins to unpack. It’s a simple yet clean hotel room. Bright sunlight shines through the windows. A large mirror hangs on the wall above the dresser.

Rachel exits the bathroom, completely naked.

GAVIN
We need to go down to the police station. They want to ask-

He sees she is naked.

GAVIN (CON’T)
Rachel!

He rips the curtains closed then throws a shirt from his suitcase at her.

GAVIN (CON’T)
What the hell’s wrong with you?

Rachel does not react to the shirt hitting her. Her eyes have gone BLACK.

RACHEL
Hello, little brother. Long time, no see.

GAVIN
Can the pleasantries wait until you’re dressed?

RACHEL
I want to thank you.

Rachel reaches forward, petting his hair.

GAVIN
You know, I uh…

RACHEL
You set me free.

GAVIN
Rachel!

He crosses away from her. She does not pursue him. The room grows dark.

RACHEL
I am not Rachel.

Gavin finally looks at her. He can now see something about her is wrong. In the mirror behind her, a DARK SHADOW WITH HORNS replaces the figure of his sister.

RACHEL
I am your brother, Alastor.

INT. VAN – CAR ACCIDENT – FLASHBACK – DAY

MOTHER and FATHER sit in the front seat talking. In the second row of seats, YOUNG RACHEL and YOUNG GAVIN sit in their car seats. In the far back, YOUNG ALASTOR sulks.

He unlatches his seatbelt and reaches forward. Steals a TEDDY BEAR from Young Rachel, twists its arm. Young Rachel cries out.

MOTHER
Alast-

SLAM!

The van swirls, glass flying.

Young Gavin watches as Young Alastor FLIES out of his seat. He HOVERS above his siblings. Young Rachel points up at him. Young Alastor’s eyes contract.

BACK TO SCENE

Gavin backs into the wall of the hotel room. Rachel approaches.

GAVIN
Alastor? That’s not possible.

RACHEL
You have broken the bonds in which the bitch encased me.

GAVIN
Rachel? She…

RACHEL
I am He of the Darkness. You lit the flame that freed me from the shadows.

GAVIN
She wasn’t crazy…

RACHEL
And now, dear brother. Let us rule the night with blood and flame!

Gavin crouches in fear.

To be continued in Part Five….
